Educational Games and Materials for Children with Speech-Language Disorders: How to Support Oral Language Development

Speech-language disorder (dysphasia) is a neurodevelopmental language disorder that affects oral expression and/or oral comprehension (not to be confused with a simple language delay). Children with dysphasia have difficulty expressing themselves and sometimes understanding what is being said to them. This often manifests as disorganized language, limited vocabulary, or difficulty manipulating sounds. At Wesco, we have selected educational games and teaching materials specifically designed to be integrated into oral therapy sessions (in collaboration with healthcare professionals) and to promote confident oral communication.

Why use visual supports for children with dysphasia?

Visual reinforcement is essential to help children with dysphasia make progress. Using playful image-association exercises is particularly recommended. Indeed, pictograms, images, and other visual supports help the child to:
  • Compensate for difficulties in memorizing words;
  • Structure their thoughts and sentence construction (syntax);
  • Feel reassured by having an alternative channel for comprehension and expression (e.g., showing an image to communicate).

What is Wesco’s product selection for speech-language disorders?

To support therapy sessions with professionals or to allow children to practice while having fun at home, Wesco offers a range of products tailored to the needs of children with dysphasia:
  • Language stimulation: themed image-association games to enrich vocabulary.
  • Phonological awareness & sound articulation: microphone recorders; playful phonology games to learn to pronounce and manipulate syllables and phonemes.
  • Sentence structuring and logical sequencing: sequential picture sets to teach children how to organize their ideas and construct correct sentences.

The aim of Wesco’s selection for children with speech-language disorders is to build self-confidence and facilitate social inclusion.
