The Decimal System: The Foundation for Learning to Count and Enumerate
As children learn numbers, they gradually become familiar with the decimal system, which is based on base 10. The decimal system is the one we use daily to count and write numbers. In the decimal system, each digit has a value depending on its position relative to the digit before it and the digit after it. For example, when a child learns to count up to 10 and visually sees that the number 2 is between 1 and 3, they will easily be able to order the numbers relative to each other. Once numbers from 1 to 10 are well mastered, children can then approach the concepts of tens and hundreds, which help them build their understanding of large quantities and visualize the number line with units, tens, and hundreds. This helps them understand the logic of repeating 1 to 10 with every new ten.
A Selection of Educational Materials for Learning the Decimal System in Cycles 1 and 2
To support children in learning numeration up to the first mathematical concepts (such as operations), we have created a special selection of educational materials focused on the decimal system. These materials allow children to count, enumerate, classify, and compare values from preschool through cycle 2 and even beyond. Each product in our decimal system selection encourages children to manipulate and experiment through play to structure their thinking and develop logical reasoning, especially during simple calculations. In our decimal system selection, you will find a variety of products approved by education professionals:
base 10 cubes, calculation blocks, abacuses, counting chains,
wooden abacuses, number lines,
Montessori sandpaper numbers, number dice, constellation dice for preschool, math balances, Cuisenaire rods, and more.
Each Tool Offers Children a Way to Understand the Decimal System
Base 10 cubes allow for many activities: some are numbered to facilitate learning. We offer unit cubes, ten bars, hundred plates, and thousand cubes separately or in sets to enable complete learning. Some kits also include learning sheets to guide children. For the youngest learners, handling puzzles and shape sorters helps them see how numbers are written and organized. Card games, writing slates, and calculation sets will also reinforce their knowledge.
Whether at preschool, elementary school, or at home, every child will find the approach that suits them in our decimal system selection. Our decimal system selection enables a progressive learning of mathematics and respects the pace of each child.
