The base of the solids is removable, a disc detaches (then clips back to close) and allows you to grab the element to be removed, in order to fill the solid with water or sand to compare the volumes of different shapes in a concrete way. The solids seem quite sturdy if handled carefully, so they are not suitable for very young or clumsy children. For the youngest, it is up to the adult to open and close the solid, the little one will just fill the solid and observe the results.
